Bill was a DS at Marylebone Lane in the 70’s where i was posted after Hendon. The CID at that time were very independent of the uniformed officers and for a young PC the CID Office was a pretty scary place to go - especially after lunch....but Bill was one of the exceptions who would never ignore a PC who was obviously in need of some help and advice and not only offer advice but also get involved - a very rare event in those days. When i became a DC in ‘81 i modelled myself on Bill by trying to be always available to help officers seeking assistance. When trying to become a DS i contacted Bill for his advice and even though he was then Det Supt and he was very helpful with his time and sound advice. A true gentleman and a wonderful example of all that is good in the police. Rest in peace Bill. Chris Broadley
